Ear Deformity – Otoplasty

Ear Deformity – Otoplasty

The shape of our ears usually doesn’t receive much attention when looking at a person. It’s only when there are deviations from the norm that attention is drawn to this area. Especially in childhood, but also in adulthood, protruding or asymmetrical ears can quickly become the center of unwanted attention. Those affected often feel excluded and ridiculed. Derogatory remarks about “dumbo ears” not only produce avoidable stress, but can also lead to a decrease in self-confidence. To spare children from these burdensome experiences, it is recommended to perform the correction before starting school, from the age of five. The operation is often covered by the respective health insurance companies (upon request) for children between the ages of 5 and 12.

The goal of the plastic correction is a natural shape and symmetry of both ears. Our experts use particularly gentle and modern surgical methods that ensure a lasting result. Tissue resection is avoided to minimize the risk of changes in shape – which can even occur years later – or conspicuous scars (so-called keloids). Resorbable sutures are used in children. This means that our young patients do not have to fear a thread removal after the operation. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in children and can be planned as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia in adults.

Our eyes, along with our voice, are an important route for communication with others. Every day we see many pairs of eyes, and just as many see us. We can express or perceive many emotions such as joy, anger, or surprise without words, just by using our eyes when we are communicating with someone. Due to their unique anatomy, age-related changes first appear in the area of the eyes: the skin becomes loose and fatty tissue can protrude forward and downward. Drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes can make us look tired or bored, even if we are in a good mood and alert. In addition, they can restrict our field of vision.

Surgical correction in the area of the upper and/or lower eyelids can help in this case. Prior to the actual procedure, detailed examinations are required to precisely identify the individual causes of the changes (loose skin, reduced stability of the eyelids, or protruding fatty tissue) and plan an operation accordingly. Every treatment begins with a thorough medical history and consultation, including photographic documentation, to achieve the best possible and desired surgical result for you. The entire range of modern, tissue-sparing surgical techniques is available to us, possibly in combination with other treatment methods (e.g. eyebrow lift, vampire lift, or autologous fat transfer). Gentle surgical techniques ensure that the sutures are hardly visible and the scars disappear completely in the eyelid-folds. The surgical eyelid correction takes about an hour and is performed in our own operating room under general anesthesia or local anesthesia.
