Net Zero Surgery

After a day of surgery, one is often impressed by the amount of waste generated by the healthcare system. Due to hygiene regulations, medical professionals are now almost forced to use and dispose of almost all materials as single-use items. This generates a considerable amount of waste, which is often not separated and recycled.

We have made it our mission to keep the amount of avoidable waste as low as possible. In our own operating room, we separate waste and use as many reusable materials as possible. In addition, we try to keep the emissions of our surgical activities as low as possible.

Anesthesie plays an important role: studies have shown that the emissions caused by anesthesia gases during surgical procedures are as harmful to the climate as the CO2 emissions of 1 million cars (Kalra et al.).

This is because anesthesia gases are not broken down by the patient, but are exhaled back into the air and then into the atmosphere. Some of these gases are more powerful greenhouse gases than CO2; for example, the anesthesia gas desflurane is 2500 times more potent (Kalra et al.). A 2019 study by the organization Health Care’s Climate Footprint calculated the following: If the healthcare system were a country, it would be the fifth-largest producer of greenhouse gases worldwide. Therefore, we use almost exclusively intravenous administration of anesthetics to avoid unnecessary greenhouse gases. In our project, we follow the strategy of “look for small wins” – even small improvements step by step lead to success.
